What are drawing bases for? ›

Base poses are the initial sketches or outlines that artists use to create more complex drawings.

Cover up with an apron or a painting smock. Make sure it's made of a thick enough material that your media won't soak through quickly. Avoid working in clothes that you mind ruining. Even with taking care and wearing an apron, you are likely to still get the odd splash of paint here or there.

Fashion croquis are a sketch of a blank figure that you use as a base for fashion designing. It's like a template that you can design on. You can load these into Adobe Illustrator and design right on top of them. That way, your designs will be proportionate and to scale, even without any drawing skills.

Grab something you can use to draw on the shirt that can come out later. I'm using a Frixion pen, that disappears with heat, which is great because it will disappear when I iron it the shirt. You can also try a pen that disappears with water or over time, or some tailor's chalk.

When artists sketch in red or blue, they can later ink over their artwork. Here's the magic: when you later scan or photograph your artwork and want to turn it into digital art, those red and blue lines are a piece of cake to filter out. No need to wrestle with a rubber eraser and accidentally Hulk-smash your paper.

Use croquis templates

You can also use the help of a croquis template. By using a croquis template the apparel drawing can be done on top of the croquis, forcing the lines and proportions into shape.

You don't have to be great at drawing if you have great templates. A template, or "croquis," can be a drawing of a fashion model, mannequin, or any figure that you trace over to design clothes. You can use a croquis to draw flat sketches or full-figure illustrations.
